Test Dept

Music Collaborators

Formed in the early 1980s in the United Kingdom, Test Dept is a renowned industrial music band known for their groundbreaking sound and powerful performances. Their fearless and confrontational approach pushes the boundaries of music, art and protest, exploring themes of politics, social issues, and activism.

Their unique blend of aggressive percussion, industrial noises, and experimental soundscapes creates a visceral and immersive experience and they quickly gained recognition for their innovative use of found objects as instruments. Their music is a striking blend of pounding rhythms, metallic clangs, and distorted samples that reflect their commitment to challenging the status quo and seducing the listener into critical reflection.

1984’s tour with the “South Wales Striking Miner’s Choir” raised money and awareness for that cause, and marked what is an on-going openness for outward exploration and collaboration which has encompassed artists, filmmakers, and activists, and the incorporation of multimedia elements into their performances and installations. Having already featured on the soundtrack to an earlier Gary Clarke production, “Wastelands”, the band recognised a kindred spirit, and have been honoured to provide further material for “Detention”.

Test Dept continue to critique and challenge the culture of power and its ignorant, abusive relationship with progressive movements and artistic autonomy. 2025 sees new plans being hatched to stand up to new and ceaseless attempts to corrupt and marginalise while supporting the activism, dissent and freedom of speech that is in their blood.
